Carlos Mendoza wasn’t about to publicly lambast David Peterson on Wednesday but said lack of accountability isn’t an issue with the Mets.
Peterson a night earlier failed to back up home plate in a defensive letdown that added to the left-hander’s ugly performance on the mound.
“As far as the messaging, I know from my end, I know for sure in the coaching staff, in the way we hold people accountable, it doesn’t necessarily have to be in front of the camera,” Mendoza said before the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Reds at Citi Field. “As far as the messaging being received, there is not a concern there.”
Mendoza added that such mental mistakes are difficult to digest.
“It can’t happen, especially at this level,” Mendoza said. “Physical mistakes are going to happen, but mental mistakes [can’t happen], especially when you are not playing well.”
Did Mendoza personally speak to Peterson?
“I am going to keep those things in house,” Mendoza said. “It was addressed, and I am going to leave it at that.”

Jorge Polanco went 1-for-2 as the DH for Double-A Binghamton to begin his minor league rehab assignment.
The veteran infielder is rehabbing from Achilles bursitis that has largely been responsible for keeping him sidelined since April 15.
Polanco was initially sidelined with a right wrist contusion.
Mendoza said the rehab plan includes Polanco playing first base after he starts consecutive games as the DH.
Polanco will have an off-day Thursday.

“How is he going to feel the next day after he gets four or five at-bats and he’s on the bases?” Mendoza said. “Today he was able to get on base and run around a little bit, so now it’s how is he going to feel [Thursday] and we’ll go from there.”
Kodai Senga is scheduled Thursday for a second rehab start since he was placed on the injured list with lumbar spine inflammation.
The right-hander threw 63 pitches in a rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie last week.
