Tiger Woods can turn to another golf legend for support.
Jack Nicklaus, who has long championed Woods as a fellow player and friend, offered encouragement for the embattled golfer as he seeks treatment following his DUI arrest last week.
“Sometimes you get, you know, too far down the line and you just need somebody to help you,” Nicklaus told The Palm Beach Post. “I think he probably needs some help. And we all want to help him. We’re all on his side.”
Woods flipped his SUV in a Jupiter Island, Florida, crash last Friday as he attempted to pass another vehicle. Police at the scene gave the 50-year-old a sobriety test and breathalyzer, and claimed to have found hydrocodone pills in his pockets.
He faces charges of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after turning down a urinalysis.
Friday’s crash marked the fourth known one for Woods, who was involved in high-profile vehicular incidents in 2009, 2017 and 2021.
The latter — a high-speed, single-car crash — left Woods with a shattered ankle and two leg fractures, one of them a compound. He’s since undergone numerous surgeries and struggled in his attempts to get his golf career back on track.
In 2023, he told Nicklaus that he struggles to walk.
For the 86-year-old golf icon, the only man with more major wins (18) than Woods’ 15, the situation is sad.
“Obviously I feel bad for Tiger,” Nicklaus said. “I like Tiger. I don’t just like him, I like him a lot. He’s been taking painkillers for a long time and I don’t know how much pain he’s in because I just don’t know.
“But I don’t think he’d be taking them if he didn’t need them.”

On Tuesday, Woods pled not guilty and was granted approval to seek treatment outside the country, revealing he “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
It has since been announced he will miss the 2026 Masters, which begins next week, and has withdrawn from consideration to captain the U.S.’s 2027 Ryder Cup team.
