As winter has arrived in full flow, many of us know what to do to ensure our house remains cosy and warm.

However, sometimes when you need it the most you can find your home not heating up as fast as you would like.

There are ways you can ensure your radiators are working to their full potential and you’re getting the most out of your heating system.

Many issues with radiators are caused by a simple problem that can easily be solved – you don’t need any specialist tools or equipment, and it won’t cost you much.

If you’re finding that one room is always colder than another, the pros recommend “balancing” your radiators to ensure they heat up evenly, according to Plumbing Force.

Balancing your radiators is a little more technical and will require some patience – but the plumbing firm says it could help you in the long run.

It requires opening radiator valves, switching the heating off, adjusting the radiator’s temperature and documenting the temperature of the pipe work.

If you’re still up for the challenge, you will need a radiator bleeding key, a lock shield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner, a screwdriver, and a digital thermometer or multimeter with a thermometer function.

Plumber Force explains that you should try to balance your radiator once a year or whenever necessary regularly.

Here are the steps to balancing your radiators:

  1. Turn off your heating systems.
  2. Bleed your radiators.
  3. Go through your radiator valves.
  4. Create a basic map of your radiators.
  5. Turn the heating system on and take notes.
  6. Turn it off again and wait until it’s cold.
  7. Turn the heating back on again.
  8. Adjust the valves on the first radiator .
  9. Check the temperature of the radiator.
  10. Check the temperature of the pipes.
  11. Repeat until you finish all radiators.

Of course if the DIY steps don’t work you might have a bigger problem, so it’s important to call in a professional.

“Always call professional plumbers when in doubt. If there is uneven heating even after bleeding, signs of corrosion, or leaks in the pipework – do not attempt to do it by yourself,” said Plumber Force.

“These are not DIY friendly. Contact your local plumbers from Plumbingforce for these extreme cases.”
