Cuba announced it shot and killed four people on an American-registered boat that was in the island’s waters.

On Wednesday morning, “a violating speedboat was detected within Cuban territorial waters,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement posted on social media.

The boat was registered in Florida, the Cuban government said. It was intercepted by Cuban forces when “the crew of the violating speedboat opened fire on the Cuban personnel, resulting in the injury of the commander of the Cuban vessel.”

“Four aggressors on the foreign vessel were killed and six were injured. The injured individuals were evacuated and received medical assistance,” the Interior Ministry said.

It’s unclear who owned the boat or if Americans were on board.

Cuba is investigating. The White House and State Department did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
