Jim Gray in dark about Matthew Stafford’s Rams future

SAN FRANCISCO — Even Matthew Stafford’s podcast co-host has no clue what the Rams star will do this offseason.

Jim Gray, who stars on “Let’s Go!” with Stafford, told The California Post on Wednesday he’s been given no indication of whether Stafford will return to Los Angeles or retire in the coming weeks.

“I don’t have any insight,” Gray said, “because he hasn’t talked to me about it and he hasn’t said anything on the show.”

Gray, though, knows Stafford is agonizing over the choice.

On one hand, the 37-year-old is coming off arguably the best season of his career with 46 touchdowns and 4,707 passing yards. But on the other, he’s battled painful injuries and was emotionally drained following a heartbreaking NFC Championship game loss.

Gray said he ultimately wished Stafford would choose to suit up for one more season.

“Hopefully he’ll win the MVP, and say, ‘You know what? Let’s give this another ride. And let’s see,’” Gray said.

“But I don’t know how he feels.”

Stafford last gave an update on his future plans on “Let’s Go!” on Jan. 26, when he told Gray he needed “some time” to come up with a final decision.

It’s been all quiet since, although Gray said if he was pressed to make a gut prediction, he’d probably lean toward Stafford returning.

“If I was guessing — it would just be a guess,” Gray said, “and it’s probably more of a hope than a guess; I hope he will continue. Because he’s so damn good.”
