Devon’s passion for exceptional cuisine has been celebrated once more, with two of its establishments earning spots among Britain’s finest for fish and chips in the latest Fry Awards.
As 2026 draws near, Fry Magazine has unveiled its esteemed list of the nation’s top 50 fish and chip takeaways and leading 10 restaurants, with Devon proudly featured in the restaurant category. Following months of covert assessment, examining everything from food standards and hygiene to service and value, only establishments scoring 96% or above earned recognition.
Now in its 13th year, the Fry Awards continue to showcase the country’s gastronomic treasures, and this year Devon stands out with two exceptional restaurants – Pier Point Bar and Restaurant in Torquay and Squires Fish Restaurant in Braunton. Regional food enthusiasts have every cause to rejoice, as the county’s standing for first-rate fish and chips has been officially validated.
The harbourside establishment in the heart of Torquay, known as Pier Point, boasts thousands of glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, helping to secure its status as a popular destination in the locale. One review describes the fish and chips as ‘spectacular’.
They added: “The fish and chips in this restaurant are outstanding. The waiting staff were attentive and charming. So lovely to sit in this restaurant on the beach overlooking the sea.”
Another customer said: “Fabulous place to eat. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the views overlooking the sea were stunning. They also collect money for a local hospice by inviting you to order a portion of invisible chips.”
The fish and chip establishment is positioned directly opposite Torquay’s celebrated marina, providing magnificent vistas across the bay. Diners can savour casual meals in a contemporary and comfortable setting whilst sampling regional flavours and exploring their wine collection.
Meanwhile, its competitor, Squires Fish Restaurant, is located further from the waterfront but delivers equally mouth-watering cuisine, according to glowing TripAdvisor testimonials. One delighted diner commented: “Best fish and chips in the world! My family and I couldn’t recommend this restaurant more.
“Everything we ate and drank was perfection! The online booking was easy to use, and it’s probably best to book ahead, as they are very popular, saying that they coped with the turnaround with ease.”
A further reviewer noted: “Had not been here for a very long time, and we were not disappointed. Had to wait a short while for a table, but service was quick once we were inside.
“Award-winning fish and chip meal: excellent, lovely crispy chips and a large piece of very tasty fish.” Squires Fish Restaurant, a family-run business that has been serving award-winning fish and chips for over half a century since its establishment in 1969, is renowned in the local area.
Reece Head, the organiser of the Fry Awards, commented: “Another year has passed, and, once again, these shops have shown resilience, adapting to today’s challenges with remarkable dedication. At a time when inflationary pressures are being felt, these businesses continue to stay positive and prioritise their customers, maintain exceptional standards, and find innovative ways to keep fish and chips affordable.
“Starting the year as award winners is a fantastic way for fish and chip shops to kick off 2025, setting the tone for a successful year ahead. Whether served in a restaurant, a takeaway, or from a mobile unit, the Fry Awards prove that quality fish and chips can be enjoyed anywhere.”
