A superfood you can get for less 6p per portion at Aldi could help reduce cholesterol levels and tackle high blood pressure.
Research from 2015 revealed that regular intake over a year “lowers cholesterol in healthy subjects with mild biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD)”.
The same research demonstrated that eating flaxseed reduces cholesterol in individuals suffering from peripheral artery disease.
Scientists from Canada also noted “flaxseed has provided beneficial cardiovascular effects in a number of animal studies”, including enhancing vascular reactivity and decreasing the likelihood of arterial plaque formation.
Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed possesses natural anti-inflammatory properties.
Beyond its cholesterol-lowering potential, a 2023 study found that flaxseed supplementation “significantly reduced blood pressure levels”, suggesting it could serve as an effective complement to blood pressure medication.
Research has also shown flaxseed may assist in lowering blood glucose among diabetics, while potentially offering substantial defence against breast cancer.
The superfood’s high fibre content also means it could help curb appetite, thereby supporting weight management goals.
Presently, shoppers can purchase 200g of milled flaxseed from Aldi for £1.69 – working out at under 6p per 7g tablespoon.
Aldi recommends incorporating flaxseed by blending it into smoothies, stirring into porridge or cereal, or scattering over yoghurt.
