If you’re seeking a dash of Hollywood glamour this weekend, look no further than the Oscar-nominated war film airing on BBC tonight.

The Darkest Hour features Slow Horses star Gary Oldman in the iconic role of legendary wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The 2017 film chronicles Churchill’s tumultuous first weeks as PM in May 1940, as Nazi forces sweep across Western Europe and pressure mounts for Britain to engage in peace negotiations.

While providing a gripping account of Churchill’s impact during those crucial wartime months, the film also delves into his personal life, revealing the complexities of his relationships with his wife Clementine and his secretary Elizabeth Layton, both of whom stand by him during this turbulent period.

Those who have already seen the film will recall its most memorable scene, which sees Churchill stepping onto a London Underground train and engaging with the British public, gauging their resolve in the face of seemingly imminent defeat.

Oldman’s metamorphosis into the iconic leader is nothing short of remarkable, with many not recognising the actor when they saw the film in cinemas. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, reports the Mirror.

His portrayal is both commanding and vulnerable, showing audiences Churchill’s fierce determination while highlighting his emotional turmoil. Darkest Hour doesn’t solely depend on Oldman’s portrayal however.

The supporting ensemble, featuring Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s devoted yet formidable wife Clementine, and the exceptional Lily James as his dedicated secretary Elizabeth Layton, also provide unforgettable performances.

The motion picture proved a massive hit in 2017, earning $150 million globally, and maintains an outstanding 84 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One viewer said: “Personally loved this movie. Has a perfect mixture of serious and emotionally charged scenes accompanied by absolutely stunning camera work and visuals. Totally recommend to my fellow history buffs.”

Another added: “Seen this film so many times now, and still love it. Gary Oldman plays such a convincing Winston Churchill… The film is captivating throughout.”

A third wrote: “The acting is phenomenal, the pacing is perfect. A riveting true story, expertly told.”

Darkest Hour is on BBC2 at 6pm today (Saturday).
