How to make cabbage have a better flavour using 1 simple ingredient

Cabbage is a versatile vegetable that serves as a fantastic side dish for a variety of main courses, from a sausage and potato traybake to a chicken roast dinner. Whilst some are not a fan of this vegetable, they may change their mind when they follow Laura Fuentes’ simple sautéed cabbage recipe that requires one “secret ingredient”. The food and nutrition expert said: “This easy recipe for sauteed cabbage shows you how to turn this simple veggie into a delicious caramelised simple side dish.”

Sautéing cabbage “adds a special flavour and texture” that you can’t achieve with steaming or boiling, reports the Express. However, to “make great cabbage”, you need to be cooking with a secret ingredient: vinegar.

Laura explained: “A dash of vinegar enhances the cabbage’s flavour in a way that reduces the need for added fats, like butter. You don’t need much either, just half a tablespoon.”

As far as the type of vinegar to use when cooking cabbage, Laura said that she likes white wine and rice vinegar, but you could also use apple cider vinegar.

How to make cabbage taste better

Ingredients

  • One tablespoon of olive oil
  • Two cloves of garlic, minced
  • One head of cabbage, finely shredded
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • A quarter teaspoon of black pepper
  • Half a tablespoon of white wine vinegar, or any preferred vinegar

Method

  1. In a large pan, start by heating the oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the garlic and brown for one minute.
  3. Next, add the cabbage and cook for three minutes.
  4. Season with salt and black pepper and give it a mix.
  5. Leave the cabbage to cook for an additional five minutes or until the cabbage is tender and cooked down. You’ll know the cabbage is just right when you see tender bits of browned cabbage scattered throughout the pan.
  6. Finally, add the vinegar and sauté for a minute before serving with your meal.

The recipe has been met with rave reviews on the food blog’s comment section. Pammy enthused, “Loving cabbage right now, this recipe was great!”

Lisa praised: “Wonderful side dish and so easy! Will be a keeper for sure.”

Judy chimed in, “This was super simple and went great with dinner tonight!”

Holly admitted: “I have never been the biggest fan of cabbage, but I gave this sauteed cabbage a try and I am now a fan! So delicious and easy to make!”

Christine even added her own twist to the recipe. She revealed, “I sprinkled bacon bits on the finished dish and accompanied it with loaded baked potato pierogies.”
