Drivers ‘have to provide fingerprints’ from today under new EU rule

Motorists will have to provide their fingerprints and biometric data from today under new EU rules for travellers. Any driver heading into Europe from Sunday morning must comply with the EU’s new Entry / Exit System (EES) which has launched from October 12.

The new system will eventually scrap passport stamps in exchange for a new digital system which tells travellers to have their photo taken and get their finger scanned. The checks will affect drivers taking their cars into Europe including passengers taking the ferry at Dover, or EuroTunnel at Folkestone. The system has been long-awaited with the scheme originally set to launch in 2022 before facing a series of delays.

Motorists have been told to “expect delays” as the new system gets up and running which could push back travel times for holidaymakers.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “The new EU Entry / Exit System (EES) is rolling out from 12th October, meaning drivers will need to provide fingerprints and have their photos taken when they enter or exit Schengen border crossing points. With a phased roll-out taking place until April 2026, we’re advising motorists to check the official requirements at the UK departure point they’re using before they set off, as these will differ from place to place.

“Drivers should be prepared for checks to take slightly longer and for entry points to be busier during the roll-out phase, especially during peak seasons like half term or Christmas. The digital EES record is valid for three years, so if your pass is still valid only a fingerprint or photo will be required at border checks.”

The Government has confirmed that motorists do not need to take any action before heading to the border, with EES checks completed before you leave the UK.

There is no cost for EES registration, with details stored for a period of three years, allowing easier access for regular travellers. The Government claimed that the new system would “improve security” and could help tackle illegal migration.

GOV.UK said: “EES is designed to improve border security within the EU and its neighbouring countries, and reduce illegal migration in the Schengen area. It will automate border control checks to help the EU stop visitors overstaying.

“EES is part of wider work the EU is doing to strengthen their border security. In 2026, the EU is expected to start operations of the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).”
