As the colder weather sets in, you may find your energy bills increasing even further, especially once it’s time to start putting the heating on. However, according to experts, one cleaning job could help reduce your bills by up to £500 a year – and it takes just five minutes to complete.
DIY expert Glen Peskett at circular saw provider, Saxton Blades has revealed that cleaning your fridge coils, a quick job most people never think to do, will help keep energy costs down. He explained: “Fridge coils are hidden away at the back or underneath, so most people don’t even realise they’re there, let alone that they get clogged up with dust.”
“When they’re dirty, your fridge has to work much harder to keep food cold, which means it’s using more electricity and costing you more money.
“Autumn is the ideal time to give your fridge coils a clean. With colder weather and heating season just around the corner, tackling it now means your fridge will run more efficiently, helping to cut bills and extend its lifespan.”
While cleaning fridge coils is an often-forgotten job when deep cleaning your home, it takes just a few minutes and is well worth doing if it can give you an extra £500 to spend on your Christmas shopping.
How to clean your fridge coils
Start by turning off and unplugging your fridge. Then locate the coils, these are usually at the back or underneath and behind a grille.
Vacuum away any dust with a brush attachment, then wipe down carefully with a cloth.
After you’ve finished cleaning the coils just place the panel back in place, plug your fridge back in and turn it back on.
