George Russell has been compared to Andy Murray amid concerns that the British Formula 1 star may not be able to achieve what he is capable of during his racing career. Aged 27, he has emerged as a superb leader on track for Mercedes but has yet to be even involved in an F1 title fight.
The comparison to Murray is, in many ways, a very flattering one. The Scot retired last year as a three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist, having appeared in six other major finals and won 49 titles in total across singles and doubles tennis.
But the consensus is that Murray would have been able to achieve so much more if it weren’t for the fact that his time at the top of the tennis world saw the sport dominated by the three greatest male players to ever pick up a racket. The Scot was denied so much more Grand Slam success by the sheer presence of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
And fears have now been raised that a similar fate could befall Russell in F1. The Brit has been touted as a superstar since he was a young racer and has blossomed into one of the finest drivers on the grid, superbly leading Mercedes this year after seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton quit for Ferrari.
Regardless, his long-term future with the Silver Arrows has been under question this year, as Mercedes explored the possibility of convincing Max Verstappen to join. The Dutchman elected to stick with Red Bull for 2026 but will surely consider his options if they are not in contention next year, putting Russell’s place potentially at risk again if teenager Kimi Antonelli continues his development and remains a superstar of the future in the eyes of Mercedes, who do not want to let the Italian slip through their fingers.
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, F1 TV pundit Lawrence Barretto compared Russell’s situation to that of Carlos Sainz, who was last year axed by Ferrari despite some strong performances and victories because the Scuderia had managed to secure Hamilton’s signature. “George Russell was in an unfortunate position in the way that Carlos Sainz was at Ferrari, right?” he said.
“When Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is up for grabs, Ferrari went and took him, and that is probably the only person who could have taken Carlos’ seat. George is in the same spot. Max Verstappen is potentially available and I guess when Toto [Wolff], he’s the guy in charge, right? The buck stops with him, and he has to look at what is the best thing for Mercedes.
“It’s just unfortunate [for Russell], in the way that it was unfortunate for Andy Murray, that Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafa Nadal were around.”
