There’s no better feeling than completing your weekly cleaning reset by freshening up each room with a gorgeous scent. Lighting a candle or two is the perfect way to mark the end of a cleaning session, but if you’re short on time, a quick spray of air freshener does the trick.

However, if you’re using this every day, you can get through bottles pretty quickly – and they aren’t always the cheapest to buy. As well as this, certain kinds can be harmful if you’ve got pets in the house. But it turns out you can make your own room spray and laundry freshener very easily, and it’s all down to one very versatile herb.

According to the lifestyle experts at Martha Stewart, rosemary is an excellent natural ingredient for so many different things, including room freshener.

It’s very popular in the wellness world right now, as the herb is said to be potentially beneficial for hair growth and scalp health, and you can drink it too. But if it’s a fresh, clean-smelling home and laundry basket you’re searching for, it can also be used for these purposes.

How to make rosemary water

As the name suggests, all you’ll need to make this concotion is water and a handful of fresh rosemary sprigs. Give them a quick rinse to clean them, then bring around three cups of water to a boil.

Take it off the heat, then add the rosemary, cover with a lid, and allow the mixture to steep for up to two hours.

After the time is up, take the sprigs out, and pour the liquid into a spray bottle.

Then, all there’s left to do is spray it around your home whenever any rooms are in need of a quick freshen up. The experts say this is a great alternative to shop-bought air freshener sprays, adding: “It smells clean, herbal, and slightly woody—and refreshes without being overpowering.”

It can also be sprayed on your clothes and bedding if they’re beginning to smell a little stale, making this the perfect all-rounder trick if you’re looking for a natural yet fresh-smelling spray to add to your collection.
