The average kitchen sink has a staggering 100,000 times more bacteria than a toilet, according to the NHS. So keeping your sink or basin sparkling clean isn’t just aesthetic, but important for your health – especially if you’re regularly cleaning dishes, cutlery and mugs in a sink full of germs.
Cleaning experts have issued a tip to get sinks sparkling clean again with just one natural item – and you don’t need any abrasive, toxic chemical sprays. Using white vinegar can help bring your sink back to life, destroying germs and removing dirt and grime, to boot.
Whether your sink is stainless steel, ceramic or plastic, you can use white vinegar to clean it.
To do this, pour white vinegar directly onto the sink’s surface, which is safe to use on any of the aforementioned materials. Then, use a soft cloth to gently scrub away at the dirt and grime. You can also use baking soda or bicarb to break down any tougher, deeper stains that have been left for a while.
If your sink is stainless steel, you can also add some extra shine by using olive oil.
According to Tru Earth: “After cleaning with vinegar, you can add shine by buffing the sink with a soft cloth soaked in olive oil. This not only enhances the stainless steel’s appearance but also creates a protective layer.
“If you have a porcelain sink, avoid abrasive scrubbers and cleaners, as they can damage the finish. Instead, use vinegar and baking soda for a gentle clean. For extra shine, apply a porcelain-friendly wax.
“Composite sinks are generally resistant to stains and scratches. Clean them with vinegar and baking soda, then rinse thoroughly. To maintain their lustre, use a composite sink cleaner as needed.
“Using vinegar to clean your sink offers several advantages. Vinegar is a natural and non-toxic cleaning agent that is safe for your family and the environment. It doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, unlike some commercial cleaners.
“White vinegar is an affordable cleaning solution. You likely already have it in your kitchen, making it a convenient choice for quick cleanings.
“The acidity of vinegar helps dissolve mineral deposits and eliminate stubborn stains, leaving your sink looking brand new. The acidity of vinegar helps dissolve mineral deposits and eliminate stubborn stains, leaving your sink looking brand new.”
