Furious locals have come together to protest against plans to build 100 new homes on a green belt site. Locals in the Bolton village, where the homes are proposed to be built, say: “We cannot take any more housing”.

Cumbria-based Oakmere Homes is beginning a consultation on building 100 homes on the western edge of the village at Tongfields, just north west of Kiln Field on the western edge of Bromley Cross. Councillors and locals have already raised serious concerns about the proposed scheme. Conservative Councillor Nadim Muslim, of Bromley Cross, says the area’s local services are already overwhelmed and so is traffic congestion.

The Leader of the Bolton Conservatives said: “For years, local councillors have fought unnecessary development in Bromley Cross. That’s because we understand what it’s like living here; with overwhelmed local services and traffic congestion making it near impossible to move around the area. We know that Bromley Cross cannot take any more housing.”

The land at Tongfields is currently utilised by dog walkers and families but this could soon come to and end.

Cllr Muslim added: “Despite this land being in the green belt, the developer is attempting to use changes brought in by the Labour Government to designate this land as ‘Grey Built,’ making it easier for developers to build but harder for residents to oppose.

“These changes are being exploited to take away one of the few green spaces we have left in our area. We believe this cannot go unchallenged.

“The land at Tongfields is used regularly by the local community, allowing dogs and their owners to exercise, as well as giving local children a safe environment to play. Additionally, sitting on the edge of a conservation area, the field complements the historic nature of Dunscar and supports local wildlife that is frequently seen in the area.”

Oakmere has published a draft plan for the new estate, which it claims will lead to “a diverse and sustainable neighbourhood”.

The plans, states: “The site is located immediately north-west of Kiln Field, accessed from Higher Ridings, and forms part of the western edge of Bromley Cross. Existing trees and hedgerows around the edges of the site will be retained and enhanced. A carefully designed landscape scheme will create attractive green areas and improve walking routes to Dunscar Wood.

“New homes will be set back from the Dunscar conservation area, with a new community open space providing a green buffer and a place for everyone to enjoy with retention and enhancement of the existing public right of way, which follows Tongfields, along the north-eastern edge of the site.”
