William Saliba is set to commit his future to Arsenal by signing a new long-term contract, despite interest from Real Madrid. The centre-back has established himself as one of Europe’s top defenders and was on the radar of the Spanish giants, but he will now ink a fresh deal at the Emirates.
Contract negotiations began in May as the Gunners sought to secure their defensive linchpin, who has been instrumental in their ascent under Mikel Arteta.
Real Madrid have a track record of snapping up players when their contracts are nearing an end – with Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold being prime examples – and were monitoring Saliba’s situation. However, the Frenchman has always expressed his contentment in London and is ready to demonstrate that commitment.
Last season, Saliba made 51 appearances for Arsenal as they secured second place in the Premier League for the third year running and advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
