Avoid 4 wrong paint colours in your kitchen or risk ‘chaotic’ and ‘cold’ home

Choosing a kitchen colour scheme may seem simple, and whilst it is up to personal preference, picking the wrong shade could create an overwhelming space. Kitchens are the heart of the home, so it is crucial to get the mood “just right”, according to Rossella Marzocchella, interior designer at Decor and Decor.

The expert said: “Colour sets the tone for how a space feels. Even a small change can completely transform the atmosphere of your kitchen.” To help, the interior designer has shared colours to avoid using in the kitchen, and ones that would be great for the space.

1. Neon or fluorescent colours

The expert explained: “While eye-catching, neon or fluorescent hues can feel visually chaotic and trend-sensitive. They can also create an atmosphere of anxiety and restlessness.

“For a calmer, more contemporary feel, muted pinks like blush or rose taupe are still quirky, but bring elegance and are much easier to style with a variety of finishes and fittings.”

2. Dark shades

It’s also best to avoid dark shades as they can make small kitchens feel “cramped” and absorb any natural light.

The expert said this often leaves kitchens feeling “cold or oppressive”, particularly in UK homes with limited sunlight. To achieve drama without overwhelming the room, consider deep navy or forest green, especially when paired with warm metals or wooden textures.

3. White

The expert continued: “Pure white may seem classic, but it can feel sterile, show stains easily, and lack the warmth needed for a lively kitchen. Creamy off-whites, warm beige, or pale greige can maintain brightness while adding subtle softness and a welcoming touch.”

If you are considering white cabinets, opt for warmer flooring or worktops as well as accessories.

4. Red and yellow

It’s also best to avoid reds and yellows as these can overstimulate the senses and potentially cause “visual fatigue” in a high-traffic area.

Instead, the expert recommended warm terracotta, soft ochre or earthy peaches to “energise” the space.

Rossella noted: “Choosing the right kitchen colour isn’t just about style, but about creating a space that feels alive, welcoming and perfectly suited to your lifestyle.

“The right palette can transform a kitchen from merely functional to truly inspiring, blending mood, light, and personality in every corner.”
