Add these gorgeous plants now for colourful garden this winter

As September is here, a new wave of garden jobs have come upon us, as this is the time to cut back and prune plants that have had their yearly bloom.

However, if you’re finding your garden is looking bare and dull after your plants and flowers have died off, fear not as one gardening expert shared his tips on how you can keep the blooming going well into winter, allowing you to get some colour back.

Taking to social media, where he’s better known as The Mediterranean Gardener with over 701,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, gardening expert Michael Griffiths shared his best tips on which plants and flowers you should plant in your garden now in order to enjoy some colour ahead of the upcoming cold and grey winter months.

“Don’t let the pots you used in summer sit empty until spring. Plant them up now for some autumnal colour,” Michael said at the start of his TikTok video.

He then went on to share what plants he has chosen to add to his own garden for winter.

He went on to write in the caption of the video: “What can I plant in pots in autumn? Don’t let the pots you used in summer sit empty until spring – plant them up now for some winter colour.”

As he was seen picking up some plants in the garden centre, he said: “Violas, pansies, heathers, conifers, ivy and hardy tub plants will all look fantastic this time of year as our gardens die down and will continue to provide impact well into winter.”

Winter garden plants that bloom include easy-to-grow options like pansies, primroses, and cyclamen, as well as shrubs with strong fragrance and visual appeal such as witch hazel and camellia, according to Garderner’s World.

You can also plant bulbs for a winter-blooming display, including snowdrops and crocus, while plants like winter jasmine provide bright, yellow flowers on bare branches.

“I personally love bold single tones like whites, reds, and greens, which will catch the eye in a pot, and will look equally fab in a hanging basket,” Michael said.

Some winter-flowering plants also benefit pollinators, providing pollen and nectar for species such as bumblebees, which are increasingly found foraging in the winter months.

“And if you’re stymied by choice, you can always get a pre-made one. Nobody has to know,” he told his viewer as he was seen grabbing a pre-made basket for his own garden.

People quickly took to the comments to share their thoughts, with many buzzing to get a second round at getting flowers for their gardens.

“Ohhhh good excuse for me to go to the garden centre, thanks Michael,” one viewer said. Someone else wrote: “Aww thanks for this cause my garden looks sad now all my flowers have died off x.”
