The best films to watch on Netflix this September from romance to adaptation

Netflix is gearing up to add a number of new films and TV shows to its streaming platform. As summer draws to a close, we’re heading into the season of Pumpkin Spice and cosy nights in. With the weather starting to change, viewers may be on the hunt for something fresh to watch on Netflix. As always, the streaming giant is set to deliver a range of brand new titles for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

Whether you’re planning a cosy night in or looking for a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, autumn promises to bring a host of new films and series to suit all tastes. This month alone, viewers can anticipate “whirlwind” romantic comedies and even a film featuring an Academy Award winner that will hit selected cinemas, reports Surrey Live.

Directed by Janeen Damian, The Wrong Paris tells the story of a young woman who signs up for a dating show believing it’s set in Paris, France, only to discover it’s actually in Paris, Texas. As she plots her escape, she unexpectedly meets a cowboy bachelor and sparks begin to fly.

The film stars Miranda Cosgrove (known from iCarly), Pierson Fodé (The Man from Toronto) and Madison Pettis (American Pie Girls’ Rules). Also appearing are Madeleine Arthur (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) and Frances Fisher (Titanic).

Netflix teases: “A young woman (Miranda Cosgrove) joins a dating show thinking it’s in Paris, France, but it’s actually in Paris, Texas. She plots a way to get eliminated until her unexpected feelings for the bachelor (Pierson Fodé) complicate her plans.”

The film is set to premiere on Netflix on 12 September.

Same Day with Someone is a fresh Thai romantic drama which centres on a privileged young woman who encounters a challenging predicament. Destiny chooses to intervene and sends her world spiralling downwards as she discovers herself trapped reliving her most dreadful day repeatedly.

A Netflix synopsis states: “Same Day with Someone is a whirlwind, heartwarming romantic comedy that follows Mesa, a young museum curator whose seemingly perfect life falls apart on August 8, 2025. From enduring a professional meltdown to getting refused by her fiancé, the day couldn’t get any worse… until it starts repeating itself.

“Trapped in a time loop, Mesa is forced to relive her worst day over and over again. But with each reset, she begins to confront her own flaws and fears-turning chaos into a mission to uncover the truth behind reliving the same day and break free from the miraculous, never-ending loop.”

Same Day with Someone will be released on Netflix on September 18.

Another romantic drama arriving on Netflix this month is Ruth and Boaz. The film will chronicle an emerging hip hop performer who abandons her existence to begin afresh in Tennessee.

Ruth and Boaz presents a contemporary take on one of the most legendary love tales in the Bible between Ruth and Boaz.

Netflix’s Tudum reveals: “From producers DeVon Franklin and Tyler Perry, Ruth and Boaz is a modern-day reimagining of the timeless love story, rooted in faith, healing, and second chances.

“Serayah stars as Ruth Moably, a rising Atlanta hip-hop artist who leaves behind fame after a personal tragedy. Seeking a fresh start in rural Tennessee, she cares for her late boyfriend’s mother (Phylicia Rashad) and unexpectedly finds new purpose and love with Boaz (Tyler Lepley), a grounded and generous vineyard owner.”

Ruth and Boaz is set to hit Netflix on 26 September.

The romantic comedy French Lover will follow the life of Abel Camara, a child prodigy who has grown up in the limelight. Despite seeming to have it all, his life takes a turn when he meets Marion, a woman in the midst of a divorce and struggling to make ends meet.

Promising a journey of emotional highs and lows, Netflix teases an “unexpected love story”, with Tudum adding: “When a jaded actor meets a down-on-her-luck waitress in Paris, their unexpected love story begins – but will it survive the glare of the spotlight?”.

Directed by Nina Rives, the film features familiar faces such as Omar Sy (Jurassic World and the Untouchables), Sara Giraudeau (The Bureau), Pascale Arbillot (Lost Bullet), and Alban Ivanov (The Last Mercenary).

French Lover is due to be released on Netflix on 26 September.

Steve is a fresh take on Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The series follows head teacher Steve, portrayed by Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy, and his students at a last chance reform school.

Netflix’s Tudum hints: “As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.””

Steve will hit select cinemas from 19 September, but won’t make its Netflix debut until 3 October.
