DVSA urges drivers to carry out ‘essential reading’

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is encouraging motorists to undertake “essential reading” to minimise the risk of an incident occurring. Whilst drivers holding a full UK driving licence must have demonstrated a thorough grasp of the Highway Code to successfully complete their theory examination, the regulations and guidance undergo constant revision.

The Highway Code outlines driving regulations and provides direction on appropriate and inappropriate actions across numerous road scenarios. Nevertheless, many drivers, particularly older ones, may have overlooked some fundamental elements of the Highway Code and could even miss vital amendments. Despite this reality, remaining current with the Highway Code remains crucial as it could help equip you for various situations and potentially prevent a crash or incident.

Posting on X (formerly known as Twitter), the DVSA stated: “It may be the start of a new academic year, but learning is for life. The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users in England, Scotland and Wales.

“Knowing The Highway Code can significantly reduce road casualties.”

Ways you can stay updated on current road rules

There exist numerous approaches to access the most current edition of the Highway Code to guarantee you don’t overlook any regulatory modifications. Ordering a copy of the Highway Code online.

Ordering a copy of the Highway Code online

If you’d rather have a physical copy of the Highway Code, you can order the most recent version from the DVSA directly . A single copy of the Official Highway Code costs £4.99, but if you need more than one or wish to buy in bulk, you should email dvsa.merchandising@williamslea. com.

Purchasing a copy from the shops

If you prefer to buy a copy of the Highway Code in a brick-and-mortar store, most high street bookshops will stock it. However, before buying, make sure it’s the latest edition with updated guidance and rules.

Purchasing the app on your smartphone

The Official DVSA Highway Code is available for both iOS and Android devices via the App Store and Google Play Store. The app costs £3.99 on both platforms.

Signing up to email alerts

If you want to stay informed about any new updates to the Highway Code, you can sign up for email alerts through the DVSA here.

Social media

Any changes to the Highway Code will typically be announced by the DVSA through its official social media channels on Facebook and X. Make sure you’re following the official accounts run by the DVSA.
