British households are being urged to stock up on batteries this week after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms. The alert has been issued for Thursday (September 4) and will affect those in and around South West England before moving North East.
It will last from 2am in the morning until 5pm in the afternoon. Due to the heavy showers expected, there is a greater risk of flooding which could impact homes, businesses and traffic infrastructure like roads and bridges. The weather agency has also warned of “lightning strikes” which will bring additional hazards.
People in the UK should be best prepared for the chaotic conditions that could ensure: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”
The Met Office has released a list of essentials households should make sure they have in the event of a powercut.
Batteries are incredibly important as they can be used to power battery candles, torches, as well as a mobile power bank to charge mobile devices and other important electronics needed during a crisis.
The national agency has also issued a reminder for people to ensure all electrical appliances that are not needed should be switched off.
You should remember to check on your neighbours, especially if they’re elderly, and always wrap up warm to stay as healthy and safe as possible.
