The joy of getting into freshly washed sheets is second to none. Nothing beats tucking yourself up in crisp clean bedsheets and drifting off peacefully.
However, as the cooler weather draws on, it becomes more difficult to get that air-dried sun soaked fresh feeling. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible though. Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, has shared his top tips for getting that sun dried feeling out of your sheets, even as autumnal chill sweeps across the UK – and it’s all to do with how you wash them. One simple ingredient added to your wash can help you sheets feel super soft and fresh and you likely already have it in your cupboard.
Deyan said: “Rather than forking out extra cash on fabric softener, white vinegar is a great home substitute. It has the same conditioning properties and can also work at removing stains on your clothing.
Unlike fabric softener, it also prevents a build-up of residue on sheets that can eventually make materials scratchy and dull their colour. Just add half a cup of distilled white vinegar to your washing machine’s detergent compartment before you run a cycle.”
To get that hotel-like crisp feeling, make sure you fully air-dry your sheets if you can and then iron them. Although in autumn it’s more difficult to put your bedding on the line, Denyan has shared his tips.
He said: “On cold and damp days, I recommend adding an extra spin cycle at the end of your wash to remove as much moisture as possible. If you have a dehumidifier, hang your sheets on a clothes horse and place it nearby to help speed up the drying process. If you need to use a tumble dryer instead, that’s fine too.
“Once your sheets are completely dry, give them a quick press with an iron (always check the care label first!) to recreate that warm, crisp summer feeling.”
The fabric composition of your sheets is important too. Although natural fibers like cotton, bamboo and linen are pricier than synthetic blends, they are worth it.
Deyan said: “They can be more expensive up front, but it will pay off in the long run. Natural fibres last longer and won’t ‘pill’ like synthetic fibres. Plus, natural fibres breathe better, making for a more comfortable night’s sleep. With Black Friday sales around the corner, it’s a great time to refresh your sleep set-up if you’re on a budget.”
