Nothing beats slicing into a poached egg, whether you’re preparing noodles or enjoying them on toast for breakfast. Nevertheless, a poached egg can frequently be quite tricky to prepare and often disintegrates in the water unless you understand the optimal cooking method. Cindy, a culinary writer and creator of Salt and Serenity, has revealed that you don’t require any specialist equipment to create a perfectly delicate and intact poached egg, as it can be accomplished in a microwave.

She explained: “Poached eggs are not something I ever made at home until a few weeks ago. They always seemed so complicated to make. Swirling the simmering water into a vortex and then gently lowering the egg into this seemed like a recipe for disaster.

“But then I started seeing people making them in the microwave all over Instagram. I wondered if it could really work. It took me over a dozen eggs until I finally cracked the code! (a little egg humour there).”

It might sound rather peculiar if you’ve never attempted it previously, but creating a poached egg in a microwave is remarkably straightforward and requires just two minutes, reports the Express.

You prepare the egg in a mug or bowl so it can effortlessly maintain its form, and the microwave gently cooks it so you achieve a soft and bouncy poached egg without any hassle.

How to effortlessly create a poached egg without it disintegrating

You will need:

  • One large egg
  • 180ml of boiling hot water
  • One teaspoon of vinegar

Method:

To start, boil a kettle. Pour the boiling water into a heatproof bowl or mug.

Next, add one teaspoon of vinegar. You’re free to choose any flavour of vinegar you fancy.

Vinegar, with its acetic acid content, aids the proteins in eggs to bind together, ensuring they maintain their shape during cooking.

Crack the egg by tapping it with a spoon and transfer it into your heatproof mug or bowl. Cover the top with a plate and pop it in the microwave at roughly 80% power for a quick 30-second cook.

The cooking time for a poached egg can vary depending on the type of microwave you have, so you might need to experiment with the timing to find what works best for you.

Avoid setting the microwave to full power as this could cause the yolk to set too quickly, resulting in undercooked whites.

Once the initial 30 seconds are up, remove the egg from the microwave and gently turn the egg using a spoon so that the yolk is enveloped by the whites.

Next, simply give the egg another 10 seconds of cooking time, and if it’s not fully set, continue to cook it in five-second bursts until it’s done.

When the egg is cooked to your liking, drain off the water and place it on kitchen paper to absorb any remaining moisture.

What you’ll end up with is a springy, perfectly shaped poached egg that’s easy to prepare without any risk of it falling apart.
