Gardeners urged to remove one thing from lawns in August

With the summer season still underway, gardeners have been tending to their green spaces before autumn and winter begin to set in. While it might be tempting to overlook garden duties, especially if you are heading off on holiday, this is actually the ideal time to give your lawn some attention.

Warm weather encourages rapid grass growth, making August the peak season for mowing. But lawn care in August goes beyond just trimming the turf. It’s about laying the groundwork for a smooth seasonal shift, ensuring your lawn remains resilient and vibrant as autumn approaches. Proper maintenance now can make all the difference in how well your lawn copes with cooler, wetter months ahead.

Experts from moowy have urged gardeners to follow one crucial task before this month ends. According to the expert, it is advisable to remove moss from the garden in August.

Moss might seem like a cold-weather nuisance, but in the UK, summer’s warmth often comes hand-in-hand with humidity—creating ideal conditions for moss to thrive even in August.

Dewy mornings and intermittent rain contribute to a damp environment that moss loves, so it’s not uncommon to spot the first signs of it creeping into your lawn during this time. Moss spreads quickly if left unchecked.

They explained: “You can do it by hand with a scarifying rake or use a machine for more extensive lawns. Apply lawn lime — lime reduces soil acidity, which benefits your grass (because it prefers a more neutral soil) and kills off the moss.”

Next, consider applying lawn lime, which lowers soil acidity, making conditions less favourable for moss and more beneficial for healthy grass growth.

Finally, iron sulphate is a fast-acting treatment that can eliminate moss in just a few days while nourishing your lawn for the coming autumn. Tackling moss now ensures your lawn stays lush and resilient as the seasons shift.
