City with ‘tropical’ beaches and £2 beers overshadowed by Barcelona | Europe | Travel

If you’re a beach lover in search of a city that boasts beautiful beaches, distinctive architecture and vibrant nightlife, Barcelona is not your only option. Riga, the capital of Latvia, may not be as renowned as its Mediterranean counterpart, but it’s equally deserving of a visit.

Not only is it closer to the UK, but it’s also significantly more affordable than Barcelona. According to Numbeo, a leading cost of living database, meals at budget-friendly restaurants average around €11, and you can enjoy a half litre of beer in a bar for as little as €2.50. What’s more, there are plenty of flights available, taking around two and hour hours.

The architectural splendour of Riga is unparalleled, with an abundance of stunning Art Nouveau buildings gracing the cityscape.

These unique (and highly Instagrammable) structures hark back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Local architects such as Mikhail Eisenstein, Konstantīns Pēkšēns, and Eižens Laube designed facades adorned with unusual floral motifs, mythological figures, and other ornate and intricate patterns, reports the Daily Record.

Today, Riga’s Art Nouveau district enjoys the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Shopaholics and food enthusiasts will find themselves spoilt for choice in Riga. The expansive central market, situated in former zeppelin hangars along the River Daugava, offers an array of goods that could keep you occupied for an entire day.

From culinary delights to souvenirs and traditional items, it’s a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

For those with a sweet tooth, the atmospheric Black Magic Bar is a must-visit. Known for its speciality in black balsam – a traditional Latvian herbal liqueur – this popular spot offers the delicacy either as a shot or as a cocktail ingredient.

Additionally, they serve a selection of handmade chocolates, cakes, truffles and ice creams.

Riga also enjoys splendid weather during the summer months, with temperatures often reaching the mid-twenties in July and August. For those seeking respite from the heat, the city’s location on the stunning Bay of Riga provides ample beach options.

The three nearest beaches — Vakarbuļļi, Daugavgrīva and Vecāķi — each feature a cafe, street vendors, benches, changing cabins, volleyball areas and much more.

Within Riga itself, there are three swimming spots close to the city centre: Lucavsala, Lucavsalas līcis and Kipsala. All are equipped with lifeguards and changing cabins for your convenience.

Yet, for those intrepid souls seeking a beach beyond the ordinary, the tropical allure of Jūrmala awaits. A mere stone’s throw from Riga by train, this Latvian coastal gem is conveniently accessible from the station.

One reviewer said: “Changing pods are available on the beach and the sand is soft and flat. We paid €5 each for a sun lounger for the day, although in the afternoon people could help themselves to ones that were left or that people had finished with. Well worth the journey from Riga which is about 25 mins by train from central Riga and very cheap. We booked the day before online and it cost us about €6 return for both of us – amazing value.”
