How to save on energy bills by making 5 easy changes

Households looking for ways to reduce energy bills without sacrificing everyday comforts are being advised to take a few simple steps to build up some notable savings at the end of the year. Every room in the home holds potential for savings — from the kitchen to the bedroom — and it doesn’t take a major lifetyle change to make a real impact.

Small habits in routine and a few smart product swaps can quickly translate to lower monthly costs. According to energy experts at Grant Store, these adjustments aren’t just about saving money, but they’re also contributing to a more environmentally friendly future. They said: “With heavy use of kitchen appliances like ovens and kettles leading the charge in driving up electricity bills, making simple swaps, such as using an air fryer for daily cooking, households can slash annual costs by half.”

That alone could mean up to £120 in savings each year, just by switching how dinner is made.

Laundry routines can give you another easy win, with the experts highlighting: “Efficient laundry habits can make a big dent in energy bills. Waiting for a full washing machine load before hitting start potentially halves yearly expenses from £120 to £60.”

Even a habit as basic as boiling only what’s needed in the kettle could cut bills by up to £30 per year from an annual bill of £60.

In the bathroom, energy efficiency can add up even faster. Showers may seem harmless, but longer sessions are costly.

The specialists added: “Having a 10-minute shower with electric heating can contribute to as much as 50p per day in energy costs. Taking shorter showers, averaging around five minutes, can result in substantial savings, cutting gas and electricity costs by approximately £130 per year.”

Bedroom and living areas shouldn’t be overlooked, as lighting and heating changes may be subtle, but they count.

“Taking measures in the bedroom can also lead to reductions in energy consumption without sacrificing comfort,” suggested the experts. “Simple swaps, such as opting for LED lighting and investing in electric blankets, offer opportunities to save upwards of £5 per light bulb and curtail heating expenses.”

The living room is a hidden hotspot for wasted energy, as according to the experts: “Stopping standby energy drain by fully switching off electronics when not in use can save around £50 every year.”

Even moving furniture can help: “Strategic furniture placement, such as keeping sofas away from radiators, can improve energy efficiency.”
