The beautiful African country with breathtaking beaches and 74p beer | Travel News | Travel

There is an African country that is largely overlooked by international tourists, but it has a lot to offer, despite its small size. There are more than 50 countries in Africa, and many of them have become go-to destinations for holidaymakers, whether they are looking for the most beautiful beach, epic safaris, or unique cultural experiences. Places like Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa are go-to destinations, but there are also very overlooked African countries.

One of them is a small country located in the east of the continent, with stunning beaches and a unique array of things to do. Sarah Hennessy of Africa Star Tours told the Daily Express that Eritrea is a great place to go in Africa. Located in the northeastern part of Africa, it is wedged between Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Sudan. Eritrea is relatively small, with a population of just 3.47 million people as of 2023. But there is plenty on offer here for tourists, Sarah said.

Described as a “largely undiscovered destination” by Sarah and her team, Eritrea offers “an authentic experience away from the crowds”. Here, tourists enjoy the capital, Asmara, which is described as “Africa’s little Rome”.

Dahlak Marine National Park is one of the top-rated things to do in Eritrea. Tourists have described the amazing scenery as well as the top-quality tours they experience there.

One TripAdvisor user said of their time there: “Nothing to say. Just amazing.”

Other top-rated attractions in the country include the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, Medebar Market, Metera ancient ruins, and the Red Sea coast in Massawa. When it comes to beaches, there are plenty of favourites for people, including Gorgussum Beach and Green Island, both located near Massawa.

Africa Star Tours says of Eritrea: “Those wishing to hike should venture to the highlands around Dekemhare, where lush valleys and rolling hills create a dramatic contrast to the arid lowlands.

“The cooler climate and scenic beauty make this region perfect for hiking and exploring. For a more leisurely experience, head to Ghibli Island off the coast of Massawa. Known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, it’s an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the Red Sea’s aquatic life.”

They continue: “One of the highlights of Eritrean culture is the traditional coffee ceremony, a cherished ritual that invites you to savor freshly brewed coffee while engaging in warm conversation with locals. This experience not only allows you to enjoy the rich flavors of Eritrean coffee but also offers a meaningful connection with the community.”

To get to Eritrea from the UK, you would typically stop in Dubai, flying with Emirates. The journey typically takes more than 9 hours.

When it comes to drinking in Eritrea, the average price of a pint of beer is 74p, according to the Cost of Living calculator Numbeo. Meanwhile, a meal typically costs under £9.

The Foreign Office does not advise against travel to Eritrea as a whole, but it does advise against all but necessary travel to within 25 kilometres of the country’s land borders.

“The land borders with Djibouti and Ethiopia are closed,” the FCDO explains. “Eritrea’s land border with Sudan is operational in response to the conflict in Sudan, and people are crossing the border in both directions.”

The Foreign Office adds: “Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Eritrea, attacks cannot be ruled out.”
