‘Easiest’ flowering plants for summer named by gardening expert

Creating a vibrant and colourful garden for summer doesn’t have to involve complicated planting schedules or high-maintenance care routines. In fact, some of the most striking summer blooms come from plants that thrive with minimal effort, making them perfect for beginner gardeners or anyone looking to fill their garden with long-lasting colour.

According to gardening expert Fiona Jenkins at MyJobQuote.co.uk, certain flowering plants stand out for being especially forgiving and rewarding in return. These varieties are known not only for their resilience but also for their ease of care and versatility across garden settings. One of them, in particular, is praised as a “low-maintenance” gem that doubles as a fabulous fragrance for your garden.

3 easiest flowering plants for summer

1. Lavender

Lavender is a widespread favourite and truly lives up to its reputation as a summer superstar. Fiona calls it a “low-maintenance summer garden” gem, due to its fragrant spires, drought-tolerance, and pest resistance.

“Once you’ve got it established, it will come back year after year,” she noted.

Lavender performs best in full sun and well-drained soil – just avoid soggy spots, especially in winter. Its scent adds a sensory element to the garden while attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

2. Marigolds

Marigolds are among the easiest annuals to grow and deliver vibrant yellow, orange, and rust-red blooms that last all summer.

Fiona touted them as “a brilliant, easy-to-grow summer annual,” ideal for beginners.

Their fast germination, pest-repelling scent, and ability to bloom until the first frost make them a practical and colourful choice.

They thrive in full sun and aren’t picky about soil, but do appreciate good drainage and regular watering.

3. Zinnias

Zinnias bring a bold splash of colour and are perfect for those looking to grow from seed on a budget.

With varieties ranging from small singles to large dahlia-like flowers, they’re ideal for filling space with ease.

Zinnias “are very easy to grow from seeds,” Fiona explained, and they’re beloved by butterflies.

For best results, plant them in full sun with well-draining soil and ensure proper air circulation to avoid powdery mildew.
