Spain: British tourists report ‘mystery illness’ with 4 symptoms to look out for | World | News

British holidaymakers in the Spanish resort of Magaluf are coming down with a mysterious illness. Those affected report flu-like symptoms, which has left some needing medical care on returning to the UK.

Magaluf is renowned for its nightlife and has been a popular destination for young Brits looking to party. Many head to the bars and clubs spread out along the Punta Ballena, where they party the night away. However, tourists in Magaluf are increasingly falling ill, sparking fears of a viral outbreak.

Some have described suffering from severe sore throats, persistent coughing, nasal congestion and extreme fatigue.

One tourist claimed that they even had to seek emergency medical care on return to the UK. “Two weeks after being in Magaluf, I’ve had to go to the emergency room twice,” they posted on social media.

Spanish authorities are downplaying the outbreak of illness, claiming there was absolutely nothing to worry about. The Balearic Medical Association’s president, Dr Carles Recasens, told IB3 news that “despite all these TikToks and posts, we’re simply dealing with a common cold virus.”

Most affected individuals report developing symptoms following periods of intense partying. These are characterised by lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and constant exposure to temperature changes between hot weather and air conditioning, combined with alcohol consumption.

Meanwhile, Spain has confirmed an outbreak of bird flu at a turkey farm in the southwestern region of Extremadura.

The spread of the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus has caused both panic and mayhem across the globe. The virus has ravaged flocks, disrupted supply and sparked an increase in food prices.

Its spread to mammals, including dairy cows in the United States, has raised concerns among governments about a risk of human transmission.

The Spanish outbreak killed almost the entire flock of 6,895 turkeys, with the 10 surviving birds slaughtered as a precaution.
