I’ve tried just about every window cleaning method under the sun. From well-known store-bought sprays that promise a streak-free shine to DIY vinegar and lemon concoctions, nothing ever seemed to leave my windows truly clear. They’d either look cloudy in certain light, or I’d end up chasing streaks across the glass with a cloth.
When I came across the idea of using tea bags to clean windows, I was intrigued — especially since I already had everything I needed in my kitchen. Black tea contains tannins, which are natural compounds that can help break down grease, lift grime, and cut through that hazy film that often builds up on glass. Tea also has a low pH, similar to vinegar, which makes it effective at dissolving dirt without leaving residue behind.
How to clean windows with teabags
Using the tea bag method, I first boiled some water and steeped three regular black tea bags (just basic black tea, nothing fancy) in a bowl.
I let them sit for about five minutes to make a strong brew, then poured the cooled tea into an empty spray bottle once it had reached room temperature.
After giving my windows a quick dust to remove any cobwebs and loose dirt, I then sprayed the tea solution generously over the glass. Using a microfiber cloth, I wiped in circular motions, just like I would with any other cleaner.
I couldn’t believe how effective it was. Not only did it cut through grime and dust that had accumulated over time, but it left the glass crystal clear without the need to buff extra hard to get rid of streaks. The tannins in the tea seem to act as a natural degreaser and shine booster, and there was no overpowering smell. Best of all, it dries quickly and cleanly with no suds or streaks.
I’ve heard it works beautifully on mirrors and glass doors, too. And for the record, I just tried it inside however I reckon using it on exterior windows would hold up just as well against outdoor dust and smudges.
This simple trick has officially replaced my chemical glass cleaner. It’s budget-friendly, non-toxic, and surprisingly powerful. I’ll definitely be reaching for tea bags next time my windows need a refresh.
If you’re looking for another natural way to get a shine on your windows, newspaper can also be used to buff away streaks.
