‘Science-backed scents’ cut blood pressure

The essential oils of jasmine and sandalwood, renowned for their sublime fragrances, have been identified as potential aids in managing menopausal symptoms, according to a doctor. The “science-backed scents” have been found to alleviate a range of issues from low mood and brain fog to high blood pressure and a racing heart, based on research-backed findings.

Dr Gill Jenkins, a GP and independent advisor to M-Club, a new health and wellness menopause range supported by an online community, said: “Menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats can be frustrating and physically uncomfortable. But, they don’t generally induce the same level of fear, anxiety and confusion as low mood and brain fog, which can make some women feel like they’re losing control, or a racing heart and high blood pressure, which can also be a big worry.”

She added that fluctuating hormone levels can lead to symptoms such as brain fog and low mood, which can significantly affect daily life. According to a report by M-Club – Helping Women Navigate Menopause With Confidence – 75% of perimenopausal women reported experiencing memory and/or concentration problems, while 69% reported anxiety and depression.

Dr Jenkins added: “For women who can’t, or don’t want to take medication, for example for medical reasons, studies show that essential oils may offer a gentle alternative for women seeking to help alleviate menopausal symptoms, such as the M-Club Calm Companion Pulse Point Roller Oil, which combines warming sandalwood and calming jasmine to promote a feeling of calm and tranquility.

“In one study, clinical evidence showed that when jasmine essential oil was applied topically, this enhanced alertness and energy levels, and was especially helpful in combating menopausal fatigue, low mood and brain fog. After the massage, participants reported feeling more vigorous and less anxious.

“In another study, when sandalwood oil was massaged into the skin, this was found to help reduce blood pressure, stress and the heart rate. The results suggest that sandalwood oil works on two levels – having a sedative, relaxing effect and simultaneously, helping to uplift emotional health as well as having an energising effect, that helps improve mood and mental and wellbeing.”
