Tourist shows reality behind quaint Cotswolds town | UK | Travel

Locals in a picturesque Cotswolds village have voiced concerns over-excessive tourism. The issue came to light after a video by Luke (@luketraveluk) showcasing the destination’s bustling streets went viral on social media.

Many believe the area has become too overcrowded during the summer months. Home to approximately 4,000 residents, Bourton-on-the-Water, offers numerous attractions including shops and restaurants.

It is situated on the River Windrush, with its five arched bridges earning it the nickname ‘the Venice of the Cotswolds’. Luke’s video has been viewed over 1.5 million times on TikTok, sparking a debate about the impact of tourism on the village.

One user lamented: “I grew up playing in that river, my nan and gramps lived there, it was never like this.” Another commented: “Looks like Bourton-on the-Water, peak season is horrible and people don’t respect it at all.”

A third shared their local perspective: “I live about three miles from Bourton and it’s amusing that people travel from around the country to come here and yet do everything they can to avoid paying to park instead they park on side streets blocking driveways!”

Whilst a fourth TikTok user added: “I see too many people for a small village where residents live. It must be annoying.”

In contrast, however, there were those who voiced their support for the crowds. “What is there not to like about this?” one person queried. “Loads of people, all enjoying something together, no doubt helping the local economy. Looks great.”

Another was effusive in their praise: “Bourton-on-the-Water – lovely place – look at all the tourists having a good day out.”

A third chimed in: “[It’s] called tourism. What the locals use to survive, you really think half them shops would still be open if they didn’t have tourism? I personally know owners there and they love it.”

And a fourth concurred: “Think of all the trade the shops are getting. I’d rather have people who aren’t drunk throwing rubbish in the water swearing etc. I don’t see anyone being disrespectful.”

The village’s official website notes that “depending on the seasons, and the day of the week, Bourton-on-the-Water presents many different faces”.

“There are times when the village is as bustling as any seaside resort, usually holidays and sunny weekends! As a rule of thumb, the earlier, or later, in the day you visit, the quieter and more tranquil you will find it.

“Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, Bourton-on-the-Water, with its richness of wildlife, history and farming, has a unique, broad and popular appeal to visitors and residents alike.

“Bourton-on-the-Water makes an excellent base for exploring the North Cotswolds by foot and bike too. The village is an intersection for nine waymarked walking routes including Monarch’s Way and Heart of England Way.

“It also features a few small circular walking routes for those who seek a more modest, but stimulating, form of exercise whilst enjoying the delights that our gorgeous countryside has to offer.”
