MPs, including 15 from the Labour Party, signed a motion calling on Trump not to be allowed to give a speech during the state visit. As well as criticising his stance on the Ukraine and Russia war, the MPs accused the president of “misogyny, racism and xenophobia”.
During his last visit to the UK, thousands of people took to the streets of London to protest against him. Trump then took to social media to slam Sadiq Khan as a “stone cold loser”.
Sir Keir Starmer presented Trump with a letter from the King inviting him to visit during a meeting at the White House in February. The pair were sat together in the Oval Office when Trump said the invitation was a “great, great honour”. He added: “And that says at Windsor – that’s really something.”
Speaking in April, Trump said: “I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William. We have really just a great respect for the family.”
It recently emerged that Police Scotland are planning for Trump to visit this summer. He is expected to visit his golf clubs in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire.
It comes after the King hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, last week. They took part in a carriage procession through Windsor, marking the first time a state visit had been held in the residence for over a decade.
The King also visited Canada at the end of May to mark the start of the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney. The visit to Ottawa was seen as a symbol of support by Canadians after Trump threatened to make the nation the 51st US state.
On Trump’s upcoming state visit, Buckingham Palace said: “The President of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump, accompanied by the First Lady Mrs. Melania Trump, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from 17 September to 19 September 2025. His Majesty The King will host The President and Mrs. Trump at Windsor Castle.”
