A beautiful stretch of golden sand here in the UK has been likened to Australia, with its rolling dunes and picturesque surroundings. One Tripadvisor reviewer went as far as to hail it “sensational”.
Bathed in sunlight that turns the sea into a sparkling diamond blanket, Camber Sands near Rye in East Sussex, could easily be mistaken for somewhere more exotic. And with this weekend being one of the hottest on record, a trip here could be ideal.
Camber Sands straddles the area between the quaintly historic town of Rye, famed for its vibrant harbour, pebbled lanes, ancient structures and superb dining spots, and the awe-inspiring promontory of Dungeness, situated at the confluence of the River Rother and Rye Bay, reports Kent Live. It is just under a two hour drive from London.
Despite its popularity and the likelihood of crowds, the beach’s vastness practically guarantees your own personal slice of serenity for the day. And a glance at the Government’s water bathing profile for Camber reveals a consistent “good” rating, a standard it’s maintained since 2021.
The beach also boasts an impressive rating of 4.3 stars out of five on Tripadvisor, based on 1,984 reviews. Visitors frequently commend its sand dunes, walking trails, lifeguards, and the family-friendly atmosphere.
As expected, Camber Sands becomes a bustling hub during the summer months, attracting visitors from far and wide, including London, resulting in a lively beach scene.
However, it’s important to remember the tragic incident in 2016 when five men tragically lost their lives after venturing into the sea at Camber Sands. An inquest concluded their unfortunate deaths as misadventure, suggesting they may have strayed too far towards a sandbar rather than being caught in a rip current.
In response to this tragedy, RNLI lifeguards were introduced. Visitors are advised to stay within the red and yellow flag areas under the watchful eyes of the lifeguards when swimming or paddling.
Visitors should also be mindful of the fast-approaching tide. Rochester District advises against digging deep holes or tunnels in the sand, as stated on its website.
A recent Tripadvisor review of Camber Sands beach reads: “Such a beautiful place that looks like it’s stood still in time. Sensational Sandy beaches and delightful dunes to watch the sea and grab a life bite or a dip in the sea.
“It’s very simple here and great for picnics . It’s truly beautiful and one of the best beaches I have visited in the UK.” Another user wrote: “This beach was just WOW! Miles of perfect golden flat sands……so reminded us of beaches in Australia.”
Although some visitors have bemoaned the parking costs. To park at Camber Central in Old Lydd Road, summer rates are as follows: Up to an hour £6; one to three hours £12; three to six hours £24; over six hours: £30.
