How to keep wasps away by using 49p plant they ‘really don’t like’

The upcoming heatwave means Brits will finally get to enjoy an outdoor gathering or just spend more time outdoors, while letting in more fresh air. However, with the warmer weather comes the feared reappearance of wasps. And while one or two may simply be annoying, a full nest lurking nearby can mean spiralling removal costs — sometimes as high as £241.

It may even seem necessary to resort to chemical sprays or even professional pest control services, but according to one expert, there’s a more natural and far more affordable alternative. Liam Cleary, outdoor plants expert at Old Railway Line Garden Centre, explained that a common and beautifully scented plant is one of the best deterrents for wasps.

He said: “Wasps are highly sensitive to strong scents, and lavender is one they really don’t like.

“Planting it near seating areas, doorways, or patios can help mask the smells that attract them, like food, sugary drinks or perfumes.”

Unlike many repellents, lavender also looks good, acting as a decorative plant, and has other aromatisation purposes.

The essential oils in lavender, such as linalool and camphor, give off a strong floral fragrance that’s pleasant to humans and pollinators, but completely off-putting to wasps.

And as if all those benefits weren’t enough, it’s also one of the easiest plants to care for.

“It’s low maintenance, smells incredible, and keeps your garden feeling calm, all while helping you enjoy a wasp-free zone,” added Liam.

Lavender thrives in full sun, prefers dry conditions, and comes in both compact pots perfect for patios or larger bushes ideal for lining garden paths.

While potted lavender costs around £6, those on a tight budget can opt for planting seeds, which cost just 49p.

To get the best results, Cleary recommends planting lavender in a sunny spot and using raised planters or pots to facilitate relocation if necessary.

For those especially prone to wasp problems, combining lavender with other naturally-repellent herbs like mint, thyme, or lemongrass can create a powerful aromatic barrier.
