While it’s a time of year when the outdoors come to life with blooms, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to add a few new additions to your garden. Although some plants are best pruned in June, there’s plenty that can be added now, and one gardening enthusiast has shared her five favourite flowers to plant in summer for “nonstop blooms”. If you notice your flowerbed is lacking in colour or texture, instead of holding off and trying again next year, consider planting these flowers now for a seasonal transformation.
In the video posted on TikTok, @annaruthdavis revealed her five favourite flowers for summer. But she instructed viewers that they must “remember to deadhead each flower as it is done blooming” to encourage continuous blooms all summer.
Five flowers to add to your garden for nonstop summer blooms
Zinnias
Available in a variety of colours, including vibrant pinks, reds and oranges, this pretty flower loves sunshine and warmth, making it ideal for summer. Zinnias also vary in height, meaning they can easily be added to flowerbeds lacking in dimension. While they can thrive in warm weather, they do require regular watering.
Dahlias
A bushy flower that’s native to Mexico, dahlias instantly add a showy touch to flowerbeds with their bold petals.
Ranging in size and colour, from classic white blooms to dramatic dark reds and purples, they’re great for jazzing up borders. Requiring up to eight hours of direct sun, they’re a hardy addition to a summer garden.
Penstemons
Not only do penstemons add an instant touch of colour to gardens, Anna shared that they’re also loved by Hummingbirds. Flowering up until the first sight of frost, the elegant petals suit mixed borders that are exposed to full sun.
Marigolds
Coming in striking hues of yellow and orange, marigolds are a flower often associated with summer, and are an excellent option if you’re looking to attract more pollinating insects into your garden. Making for a bold addition to borders, they can also be planted in pots.
Cosmos
A sun-loving flower that produces masses of feathery foliage, cosmos come in shades of white, pink, red, orange and yellow and easily brighten up any garden. Requiring at least six hours of sun, they’re loved by many gardeners in search of a low-maintenance addition.
