A WOMAN has slammed another mum for leaving her baby in the car when she drops her older child off at nursery – and it’s sparked a fierce debate.
Rockandrollwithit took to Mumsnet to ask if she should report the mum for leaving her nine-month-old son in the car alone, sometimes for “10 minutes or more”.
Getty – Contributor A woman has criticised another mum for leaving her nine-month-old baby in the car alone for 10 minutes while she does the nursery drop off
She wrote: “Every morning for the past week or so when I’ve dropped my three year old at preschool I’ve noticed a baby left in a car on its own outside.
“I have a six month old as well as my three year old so I know how much of a faff it can be doing the drop off.
“AIBU (am I being unreasonable) to think the baby shouldn’t be left in the car?
“Car is parked right at the corner of a busy junction on double yellow lines – it’s a 2 min walk away. There’s no way she could see the baby as you have to go round the corner.”
Getty – Contributor Some agree it’s a dangerous move, but others think she should mind her own business
The mum explained that she’s thinking of having a word with the nursery manager, but her husband thinks she should “stay out of it”.
The issue has divided opinion, and racked up more than 180 comments in response, so where do YOU stand?
Some mums agreed with her husband, like kerryweaverscrutch who said: “It’s really not your business, and its not like its any harm.”
While PiggyPoos wrote: “I’ve done it but it’s been parked on a square with eyes on and a quick drop in.
“To be honest it’s a stretch to say the baby is in danger isn’t it? The other mum has assessed the situation and is happy with it.”
Steeley113 said it was “no different to paying for petrol or nipping cash point.”
And Rumpledfaceskin added: “I wouldn’t get involved myself. I think it’s only illegal if it’s deemed as placing them in harms way”.
Is it illegal to leave your child alone in the car?
- It IS illegal to leave a child alone – if doing so places them at risk.
- UK law doesn’t give a specific age or situation for this, leaving the decision making down to the parents.
- The NSPCC, however, advises that kids under the age of 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time.
- The charity adds that babies, toddlers and young kids should NEVER be left alone.
- Chris Cloke, of the NSPCC, told the Hull Daily Mail: “When left alone in a vehicle, young children can very quickly start to get anxious and distressed.
- “Even if they’re sleeping peacefully when you leave they could well wake up and get very upset when you’re not there to look after them.
- “They would not be able to protect themselves in an emergency and may even try to leave the vehicle to find you.”
But others were on the mum’s side. MrsPreston11 said: “I agree that it’s not right. And yes, would probably have a word.”
While QueenDramaLlama wrote: “Would you leave £1000 in cash on show in your car for 10 minutes? No? Then why on earth would you leave your baby!”
And Birdsgottafly added: “I would report it. There is nothing more important than looking after your under one year old. You don’t put them at risk.”
Carryondoctor, meanwhile, said: “Concerns about the baby being kidnapped or the car being hit are one thing, but the most likely is that the baby could get really upset.
“I would hate to think of my baby crying for 10 mins or so and nobody being there to soothe her.”

Best poems for Mother’s Day
Rock Me to Sleep – Elizabeth Akers Allen
The beautiful poem is dedicated to the bond between mum and child, which is still in full force in adulthood.
The final verse reads:
Mother, dear mother, the years have been long Since I last listened your lullaby song: Sing, then, and unto my soul it shall seem Womanhood’s years have been only a dream. Clasped to your heart in a loving embrace, With your light lashes just sweeping my face, Never hereafter to wake or to weep;— Rock me to sleep, mother, – rock me to sleep! A Mother’s Day Prayer For You – Anon
I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you to thank the Lord above for blessing me with a lifetime of your tenderhearted love. I thanked God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in time of laughter and of tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I bless the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be!
Wonderful Mother – Pat O’Reilly
God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.

Funny poems for Mother’s Day
This Be The Verse – Philip Larkin
If your mum’s got a sense of humour – she may enjoy this rather negative portrayal of parenthood.
But make sure she knows you’re joking if you don’t want to offend her on the big day!
They f*** you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. But they were f***ed up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another’s throats. Man hands on misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Get out as early as you can, And don’t have any kids yourself.
A cheap Mother’s Day gift – Unknown
Mum, I know I owe you the world
And you deserve no less
But circumstances have unfurled;
I’m in a financial mess.
For Your Mother’s Day party
I write for you this ditty.
My poetry skills are hearty
And cheap, but oh so witty!
Mother’s Day threat – Unknown
Mum you know the worst of me, My weaknesses and follies, I know you’ve seen me poop my pants and cut the heads off dollies, You know all my most embarrassing moments, You know that I’m a nut, So what can I do to repay your love… and make sure you keep your mouth shut!? A MUM’S school has threatened to phone social services, all because she doesn’t want to go to parents’ evening.
Posting on Netmums, Leigh C explained that her child – who is in senior school – is a “model student” with “top marks in all subjects” and an 100 per cent attendance rate.
Getty – Contributor A mum was horrified when her child’s school threatened to report her to social services for skipping parents’ evening
The mum previously ignored an email and phone call telling her the meetings were now “compulsory”, but she wasn’t prepared for what happened next.
Leigh revealed: “Today, they’ve now been told that if parents don’t attend, it will be reported to Social Services as a safeguarding issue!!”
It’s sparked a fierce debate, with some branding the school “ridiculous” – and others asking why the mum is refusing to attend such an important event.
Among them was SM W, who wrote: “I think reporting it as a safeguarding issue is absolutely ridiculous.
“However it would take a social worker 30 seconds to look at you and realise there’s no probs (sic) so it doesn’t really matter.
“Why don’t you want to go though? Don’t you want to hear from your child’s teachers perspective?
“Your kid can’t be perfect at everything, they will may suggest areas that you can help support them in.”
While Katie D wrote: “Calling social services is odd and ott (over the top).
“But not wanting to go and not being interested in going and hearing about your child’s education is also odd. I actually can’t understand your point of view at all.”
Netmums She took to Netmums to air her annoyance – but some couldn’t understand why she would want to miss such an important event
And SLP added: “I doubt SS (social services) would appreciate the call. That said I can’t understand how anyone wouldn’t want to go to a parents evening, it’s even better when they are glowing reviews.
“My husband has sometimes missed them due to his job and it really bothers him, seems such a shame when you are able to.
“It’s showing your child support, it would come across to me you don’t care as they’re doing well, maybe they want you to hear their praises?”
But others have slammed the school, with Eva M saying: “I agree with you, this is very wrong of the school and way beyond their remit.
“People absolutely should not feel blackmailed or bullied into attending.”

“I weighed a whopping 210lbs, my blood pressure was really high, I had high cholesterol and since then, since December I changed what I eat. I have a plant-based diet, I work out.”
Will went on to say that two major health incidents served as “a wake-up call” for him after he failed to quickly recover from bronchitis.
