What is the shelf life of my store cupboard essentials?

Not only do they lose their flavour but these items can start to rot if left unused for months.

Here, we reveal the real use-by-dates of kitchen must-haves.

Teabags

Shelf life: Three months

There’s no point bulk-buying too many as a box of teabags, unopened, will last around one year. Once opened the shelf life drops to just three months.

As a nation we love our brews and while drinking tea from an old teabag won’t kill you, it won’t taste as good as a fresh brew.

Dried herbs

Shelf life: One year

After opening, most herbs and spices lose their flavour after a year so there’s really no point in wasting cupboard space on them – be brutal and throw them out.

Dry pasta

Shelf life: One year

One of the most popular foods in the world, but just because it’s dry doesn’t mean it will last a lifetime.

If you store your pasta in glass jars and not in airtight containers then absorb moisture and become limp and sticky and the taste and texture won’t be the same.

Shelf life: Three months

Once opened, if you keep it at room temperature, a jar should last about 3 months before it starts to dry out.

But, if you store it in the fridge it can last up to six months.

Not only do these tend to go solid if kept for too long, they also lose their flavour – which is the whole point of using them.

Always keep them in their individual wrapping.
