AN EXTRAORDINARY map has emerged which starkly lays bare where most people are living in the world and how much space they have to live.
The graphic has split the world into seven equal areas of population and the results are astonishing.
REDDIT/UNKNOWNDEXITY The map which shows the world carved up in regions with the same numbers of people living there
It was posted on Reddit with the aim of putting the world's population into perspective.
Amazingly, a partial section of east China and Japan has more people living there than the continents of north and south America plus Australia and New Zealand.
A smaller region comprising the Indian subcontinent and Myanmar has the same too.
And while it is eight times smaller than a territory spanning Middle East and Europe it has the same numbers living there.
The map essentially revealsmost people are crammed into a relatively small space in south Asia.
Cooling off in China can be a cramped affair
Perhaps it is no surprise, given how tightly packed everyone is in the nations, that their populations make up the bulk of those emigrating to the West.
People have most room in the Americas and Australia.
Some 4 billion of the world's 7.4 billion people live in urban areas, the World Bank said last night.
By 2045 it expects that to rise to 6 billion.
