“DROPPING my red silk gloves on to the floor next to where my clothes lay scattered, I was left wearing nothing but nipple tassels and a skimpy diamanté thong.
“I gave a sultry smile to my captivated audience and could see they were watching my every move. But I wasn’t working a room full of men in a seedy strip club – I was performing to a handful of women who were all desperate to learn about the art of seduction.

“I’ve not always been body-confident. As a teenager I was flat-chested, and the boys at school used to bully me for it. But when I moved to London in July 2004 and began working as a dancer and singer in pubs and clubs to make ends meet, my self-esteem gradually grew. Then, in 2006, on a complete whim, I decided to sign up for a burlesque class.
“Turning up on my own to my first lesson, I had major butterflies in my stomach, but I was also excited. I quickly discovered that burlesque made me feel really empowered as a woman and in control of my body.
“After four months of lessons, I even felt confident enough to try and make a living out of it.
“I put together a few routines with a small troupe I’d met through the classes, and we called ourselves Miss Polly Rae And The Hurly Burly Girlys. Our first gig was at a posh bar in Soho. As I shook my hips and slowly stripped while tantalising the audience with a feather fan, I’d never felt sexier.

“Thankfully, the venue loved it, and gave us a residency after the first night. By 2010, we were branching out and performing regularly in theatres and clubs in the West End.
“Often after a show, female audience members would approach me and ask for tips, in awe of my sexual confidence. It wasn’t long before I realised I could use my skills to show that anyone can become a seductress in the bedroom, and so I decided to host seduction classes.

“A friend ran an erotic lingerie shop in London, and I knew it would make the perfect risqué venue for my lessons. I decided the classes would be really intimate, with only 10-12 women in each and strictly no men.
“At the first class in February 2014, to help relax everyone, we had some prosecco and I asked each lady why they’d come. Whether they were single or in a relationship, most said they wanted to spice up their sex life, while others admitted they were there to boost their confidence.

“Then we moved on to the fun part, where I taught everyone a few raunchy burlesque moves, from the wiggle – a figure-of-eight movement with your pelvis – to the bump and grind. I also showed the ladies how to hold their body confidently and walk with sex appeal, which is all about drawing attention to your pelvis and assets.
“After the two-hour £95 class, every single one of the women left brimming with confidence and excited to try out all the new techniques I’d shown them.
- Burlesque originally began as a comedy performance.
- Dancer Dita Von Teese once splashed out £50,000 on a dress for her burlesque show.
“I’d loved every minute, too, and I knew I was doing something right when more women got in touch to find out when my next lesson would be. I’ve been running classes ever since.
“Understandably, most people are shy and guarded when they first arrive, or confess that they are insecure about their bum or stomach. But it’s my job to get them to relax and lose their inhibitions.
“Often I see women who have been dragged along by a pal, but by the end they’re shimmying their hips and pulling off silk gloves with their teeth.

“Allowing your inner seductress to come out can be really fun, and we always have a giggle. It’s important to be vocal, too. I tell the ladies that they shouldn’t be afraid to speak to their partner, telling them what they want and asking them to tell you what they want.
“My fiancé Eric obviously benefits greatly from my job. We met during my residency at the Hippodrome, as he has a job in hospitality.
“He spent eight years working in Las Vegas, and has a really laid-back attitude.
