EATING nuts regularly could lower the risk of heart failure and an irregular heartbeat, say researchers.

Those who consumed nuts one to two times a week had a 20 per cent lower chance of heart failure, according to the 17-year Swedish study of 61,000 people.

Even a small increase in nut consumption had an effect, it was found, with those eating nuts three times a month cutting their chances of irregular heartbeat by three per cent.

Previous studies have also found that regularly eating nuts can lower the risks of heart disease and stroke.

The researchers said: “Results from this large prospective study suggest that nut consumption or factors associated with this nutritional behaviour may play a role in reducing the risk of atrial fibrillation and possibly heart failure.
